Tortured papers - 2013.
Tortured papers is an exercise in rupturing the alphabetical structures, a graphic split from the grapheme that results in fusion/clash with the square, circle and triangle, primary plane elements that symbolize the author's devotion to geometry and evoke its perennial presence. The series of works created in India ink and graphite on parchment paper represents the fusion of the alphabetical structures of Latin letters - the author's subject of study since 1989 - with the techniques of fragmenting them added to geometric elements. Subjects range from post-alphabetic elements, to floating square and triangular figures, to the aesthetic seeds of the concept of repetition - represented by the dense series of straight lines - which from being spatial in this series will evolve to temporal in the later period of Temporal Units(2023).
The evolution of the Latin letters - the center of Rae's artistic production in the Burners period - separates them from their utilitarian function as graphemes associated with their respective phonemes, which in this series becomes the starting point of a new research. The works depict abstract scenarios, made with a surgical technical stroke in which elements alternate in a balanced battle of checks and balances, and which mark the author's drive in wanting to move beyond the alphabet. Rae takes advantage of the transparency of the working medium to create a whispering three-dimensionality that is both delicately divergent and at the same time reminiscent of the two-dimensionality of the study sheets he worked on in the decades prior to this series.
The letters have now exploded and their open structures then interact with the vast arsenal of complements functional to their evolution. The aesthetic rhythm is frenetic and the stroke sharp, witnessing a mathematical forma mentis pulsing with internal tension and technical executive rigor. The Tortured papers are maps of the passage of language from alphabetic to conceptual, containing the key elements of the Ghetto Landscapes period and the later Exploded Structures on canvas, juxtaposed with the great Stylewriting classics such as rounded clouds and sharp arrows. The black/red color code used in this series is the recurring minimal solution that also characterizes much of the author's work on canvas, which remains faithful to him by confirming, in his production, the rejection of chromatic cosmetics considering them superfluous. He approaches this series with an attitude of studying and searching for new interactions between the geometry applied to the architectures of alphabetic structures and the space in which they float.
In some works-particularly TP -18, TP-19, TP-20-the exploded letters disappear and give way to forms, which made freehand in a state of execution close to an automatic writing process, become protagonists creating sophisticated interconnected structures. The repetition of the straight lines inscribed in the figures or free-standing, introduces into Rae's production the concept of repetition, which would later evolve into that of temporal succession, which would be the underlying theme of the later series of Modular Systems (2011/ongoing) and Temporal Units (2023). The dense amount of linear, post-alphabetic, geometric elements and the "war-like" rhythms unleashed by their interactions place the paper medium in a conceptual condition of extreme load by putting it under physical strain, this idea therefore titles the series "tortured papers" wanting to evoke the figurative extreme limit inflicted on the paper as the theater of the intense scenario created by the author.

Tortured papers è un esercizio di rottura delle strutture alfabetiche, una scissione dal grafema che sfocia in fusione/scontro con gli elementi geometrici primari. La serie di opere realizzate a china e grafite su carta pergamena unisce le strutture alfabetiche delle lettere latine con le tecniche di frammentazione delle stesse. I soggetti sono elementi post alfabetici, figure quadrate e triangolari fluttuanti, semi estetici del concetto di ripetizione - rappresentato dalle fitte serie di linee rette - che dall’essere spaziale in questa serie si evolverà a temporale nel periodo successivo delle Unità temporali (2023).
L’evoluzione delle lettere latine - centro della produzione artistica di Rae nel periodo dei Burners - le separa dalla loro funzione utilitaristica di grafemi associati ai rispettivi fonemi, che in questa serie diventa il punto di partenza di una nuova ricerca. Le opere rappresentano scenari astratti, realizzati con un tratto tecnico chirurgico in cui gli elementi si alternano in una battaglia bilanciata di pesi e contrappesi e che segnano la spinta dell’autore nel volersi muovere oltre l’alfabeto. Rae sfrutta la trasparenza del supporto di lavoro per creare una tridimensionalità sussurrata che si discosti in maniera delicata e allo stesso tempo richiami la bidimensionalità dei fogli di studio su cui ha lavorato nelle decadi precedenti a questa serie.
Le lettere sono ormai esplose e le loro strutture aperte interagiscono quindi con l’arsenale di complementi funzionali alla loro evoluzione. Il ritmo estetico è frenetico e il tratto nitido, testimone di una forma mentis matematica che pulsa di tensione e di rigore. Le Tortured papers sono mappe del passaggio del linguaggio da alfabetico a concettuale, contengono gli elementi chiave del periodo dei Ghetto Landscapes e delle successive Exploded Structures su tela, accostate ai grandi classici dello Stylewriting come le nuvole tondeggianti e le frecce acuminate. Il codice cromatico nero/rosso utilizzato in questa serie è la soluzione ricorrente che caratterizza anche parte dell’opera su tela dell’autore, che gli rimane fedele confermando, nella sua produzione, il rifiuto della cosmesi cromatica ritenendola superflua. Affronta questa serie con un atteggiamento di studio e ricerca di nuove interazioni tra la geometria applicata alle architetture delle strutture alfabetiche e lo spazio in cui fluttuano.
In alcune opere - in particolare TP -18, TP-19, TP-20 - le lettere esplose scompaiono e lasciano spazio alle forme, che realizzate a mano libera in uno stato di esecuzione prossimo ad un processo di scrittura automatica, diventano protagoniste creando strutture interconnesse. La ripetizione delle linee rette inscritte nelle figure o libere, introduce nella produzione di Rae il concetto di ripetizione che poi evolverà in quello di successione temporale, che sarà il tema portante delle serie successive dei Sistemi Modulari (2011/in corso) e delle Unità temporali (2023). La quantità di elementi lineari, post-alfabetici, geometrici e i ritmi “bellici” scatenati dalle loro interazioni, pongono il supporto cartaceo in una condizione concettuale di carico estremo mettendolo a dura prova fisica, questa idea titola quindi la serie “carte torturate” volendo evocare il figurato limite estremo inflitto alla carta in quanto teatro dell’intenso scenario creato dall’autore.
